When should I rent a core bit adapter instead of a dedicated core drilling rig?
+
This adapter is ideal for drilling dry, medium-diameter holes in softer masonry materials using a standard rotary hammer drill. It is commonly used for: running dryer vents through brick walls; installing conduit or plumbing pipes in block basements; and drilling HVAC duct passages. For heavy-duty reinforced concrete or holes larger than 6 inches, a dedicated wet core drill rig is a much better choice.
Can I use my drill's hammer mode with this adapter and a diamond core bit?
+
No, you must switch your rotary hammer drill to "rotation-only" mode. Using the hammer or percussion action will quickly shatter the diamond segments on your core bit and can damage both the adapter and your drill's chuck.
What shank styles are available, and how do I know which one I need?
+
We offer these adapters in SDS-Plus, SDS-Max, and Spline shank styles to match your specific rotary hammer drill. Check your drill's chuck type before renting to ensure a proper fit, as these shank styles are not interchangeable.
How do I start a hole accurately without a pilot bit when using this adapter?
+
Because dry core bits do not have a center pilot bit, you should start your cut at a 30-to-45-degree angle to score a groove in the masonry. Once a shallow crescent groove is established, slowly bring the drill upright to a full 90-degree angle to complete the hole.
What safety precautions should I take when dry core drilling with this adapter?
+
Dry drilling in concrete, brick, or block generates a significant amount of hazardous silica dust. Always wear a properly fitted respirator, safety glasses, and hearing protection, and use a dust extraction shroud connected to an OSHA-compliant vacuum if working indoors.
Do I need to rent the core bit and drill separately?
+
Yes, this rental is for the adapter only. You will need to rent or supply a compatible rotary hammer drill (SDS-Plus, SDS-Max, or Spline) and a dry diamond core bit with a standard 5/8"-11 female thread.
